ICE SKATING 滑冰Septembers in Redlands are always hot, so this month the international student government wanted to organize an activity which could take place somewhere cool. The government decided that the best activity would be Ice Skating! On September 19th most of the international students took the school bus to the ice rink in Ontario. After about one and half hour we arrived and immediately felt the strong cold air and the temperature difference between inside and outside. That Ice skating place had a big rink which could accommodate about 200 people. We changed into our skates quickly and were eager to have fun. At first, some students took a while to get used to the skating but nevertheless after a while we all skated well. Even if some students tumbled hey still tried to keep going, we had fun supporting each other. After two hours of ice skating we enjoyed a meal together at a Korean restaurant. The food was very delicious. We all felt full and satisfied on the way home.

BEACH TRIP 海滩游(2015. 8)Saturday August 22, on the first weekend of a new school year starting, the annual beach trip of ACA international students was took place at Huntington Beach.
68 students. Five chaperones. Only four days of preparation. Compared to the previous years, the size of the student body was larger than last year, and the preparation time was rather short More people, more personalities, and accordingly, harder organization. Pleasing everybody in the group with so many newcomers within such little time seemed impossible. “I was in charge of the beach games this year,” senior representative Minghao Chen said, “we worked hard as the student government [trying] to make it better [than last] year.” Fortunately, the effort of the International Student Government turned out to be more than worth it. "This was my third time [and my last time] going to Huntington Beach with all my ACA friends,” senior Kris Zheng said, “I think it was the most interesting beach trip. We took pictures together to make memories." Inspired by the movie “You Are the Apple of My Eye”, Kris’s group of friends came up with the idea of taking pictures on a stone wall, imitating the poses in the movie. They promised to take the pictures every year since three years ago, but as the years go by the group of friends has altered. Having many of her best friends from previous school years transferred away, junior Susan Wang said, “Even though we go to the same beach every year, it always feels different from the year before since people are coming and leaving,” For the new students, that was not stopping them from extending their talent of photography. Almost everyone was obsessed with taking pictures that day. Under the sun, in the shade; up on the bridge, down by the bay. A flood of pictures routed all our social media. Football. Volleyball. Frisbee. And then lastly, the food: Barbeque. Hot dogs. Watermelons. The fire pit was burning bright, shining on students’ messy hair, melting away the chocolate and marshmallows as well as the sorrow of having some old friends absent, and the unseen barrier between these unfamiliar faces in the brand new school year. “The beach trip has always been the time when the new students and the returning students to know each other better, every year.” Susan said. Who would remember how awkward they reacted in the games? Who would let the broken handle bar of that rented bike ruin the night? Who would let the longing of the absent old friends keep troubling them for the whole new school year? Time would wash all those sadness away. The newborn friendships were what truly made the night memorable. They will last as long as the shore line we walked on, far into the unseen other side. |
