STUDENTS' IMPRESSIONS
Susan Wang
So far, I have been studying in ACA for about seven months. As an international student, it's not easy for us to get into an unknown and totally different environment. So, at first I kind of had a hard time like everybody else did. The first problem was the language. I couldn't understand everything the teachers said in class. The only thing I could do about that was to spend more time to work harder. So every day when I got home, I had to use a translator to go through all the words that I didn't know and sometimes it took me a long time to understand a really short passage. Also, most of the homework focuses on critical thinking questions instead of lots of memorization work like in China, which means we need to understand and really think about it. We have a lot creative projects to do too, so it was really challenging for me, because I have never done them before. Another problem was that we usually stay with Chinese people and speak Chinese all the time at first, so the American students wouldn't want to talk to us and we seem like being a part of school. Once I realized this, I started to make myself talk to American classmates and teachers, I found that they are really nice, they would like to talk to us and make friends with us actually. I tell myself, don't be afraid of making mistakes, most of the time they would still understand. In addition, mistakes can actually help us to learn. So now I'm doing well in school, I love all my classes and all my teachers. I have lots of American friends and I am not scared of talking to teachers anymore. I'm pretty surprised that I have no problem to communicate in English now. The biggest difference between Chinese high school and ACA is, in China, student's only goal is to study, they seem never have time to relax and have fun. But here, there are lots of interesting activities in school and even in the international student center. Before school started, I participated in the summer orientation for new international students. In two weeks, we went on field trips and did lots of fun activities so that we learned about our school, our city and also each other while having fun. Besides that, we also went to Huntington Beach, go-karting, and visited UCLA and USC. I really feel loved in this big international family. About a month ago, it was our lunar new year, we brought decorations and traditional snacks from our hometowns and decorated our school. We had Chinese food and celebrated it together. It was the most special New Year I have ever had, with this big family in ACA. We go out with school a lot too. All the high school students went to a three day and two night retreat in October last year. It was a good time for me to make American friends and practice speaking. We have service day once a year. On service day, we go to public places with our link group members to show our strength to society. There are even more--spirit week, homecoming dance, boon dog Olympics… and even more yet to come. Furthermore, there are all kinds of clubs, sport teams that you can join, you can do almost everything that you can think of in your spare time. I enjoyed all of them. I'm not saying the school is easy, however it does combine work with fun. I love going to ACA and I'm enjoying my life. At the same time, I'm still learning, not only English, not only knowledge, it's more culture and more life skills. |

I am currently enrolled at Arrowhead Christian as a sophomore. I was afraid about coming to America, but now I have lived here for two years and I cannot believe that I was afraid about coming to America for studying. It was a big turning point for me to come to ACA because of the many experiences I've had here are preparing me for the next step in my life. If I didn't come to ACA, I may not have changed in such a positive way. Many people helped lead me the right way. Mr. Han and Mr. Cole gave me a lot of helpful advice. My friends interact with me a lot and have given me courage in speaking English. My family sent me to ACA and while they worried about me, they also gave me a goal in education. If I didn't come to ACA, I may not appreciate my family the way I do now. In addition, I may not have known what to do in the future. I'm happy and grateful that I came to ACA |

I'm James. I am in my first year at this school and I’m sophomore. When I first decided to study in US, I felt very confident. However, 2-3 weeks before, I left I started to worry that I would not adapt well. I need not havv feared because Mr. Han and my tutor have helped me out a lot. I know that being in the U.S is such a valuable experience for me. I am enjoying getting to know other international students, my host family and some American students. It's great to share our cultures with each other. I like that ACA doesn't only focus on grades like in South Korea. Here, developing the individual skills and talents of each student is very important. |

I have been in America for 2 years and it not easy for me to adapt the new environment, but I do better now. During the first year of school, I had have some trouble with my study in school so I use the translations for my homework since I don’t understand what were they saying, especially in History, Science and English because it really hard and the homework the teacher gave us were really long too. However, I had learned how to deal with it better by ask questions with my teachers in and after class. In the first two months, I don’t have any American friends because I afraid that I’ll make some mistake while I’m talking but I had improve it by learning it more by do some more communicate, hang out, group homework or playing games together with them. Some part of me still afraid of making mistake because I thought that people will hate me if they misunderstand what I’m saying. But right now I try to do my best in class and try not to make any mistake or trouble. I love ACA because the system of teaching it different from my home country. At ACA, teacher cares us on how do we do in their class, how the homework, projects, etc and we don’t need tutor! However, in my country, everything had it price and I don’t like my parents pay money for things, subject or extra class that I know I’ll do well on it, plus, I have to wake up extra early in the morning to repair to go to school, like I have to be at school at 06.45 AM till 12.45 PM. Beside that, the class is too crowded for teachers to keep their eyes on each individual students. ACA have a lot of activities like homecoming, retreat and pep rally. Also the international office also have some fun activities for me and other internationals students to relax in the weekend but also learn more about American Culture. I feel lucky to be a member of ACA family, enjoy school, activities and be able to study here. I’m grateful and there is nothing can compare to this chance, this life of me right now. |
